What is mercy?

Psalm 103:8-10The Lord is compassionate and merciful, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. He will not constantly accuse us, nor remain angry forever. He does not punish us for all our sins; he does not deal harshly with us, as we deserve.

The Lord is merciful and gracious; he is slow to get angry and full of unfailing love. He will not constantly accuse us, nor remain angry forever. He has not punished us for all our sins, nor does he deal with us as we deserve.

Micah 7:18Where is another God like you, who pardons the guilt of the remnant, overlooking the sins of his special people? You will not stay angry with your people forever, because you delight in showing unfailing love.

1 Peter 1:3All honor to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, for it is by his boundless mercy that God has given us the privilege of being born again.

Lamentations 3:22The unfailing love of the Lord never ends! By his mercies we have been kept from complete destruction.

Isaiah 63:9In all their suffering he also suffered, and he personally rescued them. In his love and mercy he redeemed them. He lifted them up and carried them through all the years.

Mercy is more than exemption from the punishment we deserve for our sins. It is receiving an undeserved gift – salvation being the greatest undeserved gift of all. Christ’s sacrifice for us, the sinners who rejected him, shows us mercy in its most powerful form. Now, we can receive eternal life, if we only accept him.
