What does God think about lying?
Psalm 5:6You will destroy those who tell lies. The Lord detests murderers and deceivers.
Psalm 119:163I hate and abhor all falsehood, but I love your instructions.
Proverbs 6:16-19There are six things the Lord hates—no, seven things he detests: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that kill the innocent, a heart that plots evil, feet that race to do wrong, a false witness who pours out lies, a person who sows discord in a family.
Proverbs 12:22The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in those who tell the truth.
God is truth, so he is completely opposed to lying and lies.
Numbers 23:19God is not a man, so he does not lie. He is not human, so he does not change his mind. Has he ever spoken and failed to act? Has he ever promised and not carried it through?
Ezekiel 13:8“This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Because what you say is false and your visions are a lie, I will stand against you, says the Sovereign Lord.”
Romans 1:18God shows his anger from heaven against all sinful, wicked people who suppress the truth by their wickedness.
God does not tolerate lying because it violates his character.
Exodus 20:16“You must not testify falsely against your neighbor.”
Leviticus 19:11“Do not steal. Do not deceive or cheat one another.”
Proverbs 13:5The godly hate lies; the wicked cause shame and disgrace.
Colossians 3:9Don’t lie to each other, for you have stripped off your old sinful nature and all its wicked deeds.
God commands us to be examples of his truthfulness. Truth lived out is even more convincing than truth spoken. Furthermore, we should hate lies because they are part of the old sinful nature to which we were slaves before we became Christians.
