Does God have any limitations?
Psalm 139:1-6O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I’m far away. You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do. You know what I am going to say even before I say it, Lord. You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand!
Isaiah 40:13Who is able to advise the Spirit of the Lord? Who knows enough to give him advice or teach him?
Isaiah 40:28Have you never heard? Have you never understood? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of all the earth. He never grows weak or weary. No one can measure the depths of his understanding.
Isaiah 55:8“My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.”
Romans 11:33Oh, how great are God’s riches and wisdom and knowledge! How impossible it is for us to understand his decisions and his ways!
1 Corinthians 2:10-11It was to us that God revealed these things by his Spirit. For his Spirit searches out everything and shows us God’s deep secrets. No one can know a person’s thoughts except that person’s own spirit, and no one can know God’s thoughts except God’s own Spirit.
God is omniscient (all knowing). God’s knowledge has no limit. He knows even our secret thoughts.
Numbers 11:23The Lord said to Moses, “Has my arm lost its power? Now you will see whether or not my word comes true!”
Job 26:14“These are just the beginning of all that he does, merely a whisper of his power. Who, then, can comprehend the thunder of his power?”
Job 36:26“Look, God is greater than we can understand. His years cannot be counted.”
Job 37:5“God’s voice is glorious in the thunder. We can’t even imagine the greatness of his power.”

Matthew 15:30-31A vast crowd brought to him people who were lame, blind, crippled, those who couldn’t speak, and many others. They laid them before Jesus, and he healed them all. The crowd was amazed! Those who hadn’t been able to speak were talking, the crippled were made well, the lame were walking, and the blind could see again! And they praised the God of Israel.
Matthew 19:26Jesus looked at them intently and said, “Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But with God everything is possible.”
God is omnipotent (all powerful). God’s power and strength have no limit. No challenge is too great for him to overcome.
Psalm 139:3, 5, 7-11You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do. . . . You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head. . . . I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence! If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the grave, you are there. If I ride the wings of the morning, if I dwell by the farthest oceans, even there your hand will guide me, and your strength will support me. I could ask the darkness to hide me and the light around me to become night—
God is omnipresent. That is, his presence has no limit. No place is far away from God.
John 5:19-22So Jesus explained, “I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself. He does only what he sees the Father doing. Whatever the Father does, the Son also does. For the Father loves the Son and shows him everything he is doing. In fact, the Father will show him how to do even greater works than healing this man. Then you will truly be astonished. For just as the Father gives life to those he raises from the dead, so the Son gives life to anyone he wants. In addition, the Father judges no one. Instead, he has given the Son absolute authority to judge.”
God’s authority has no limit. Nothing is out of his control, and no deed is too great for him to accomplish.
Job 9:10“He [God] does great things too marvelous to understand. He performs countless miracles.”
Psalm 92:5O Lord, what great works you do! And how deep are your thoughts.
Ecclesiastes 3:11God has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God’s work from beginning to end.
Ecclesiastes 11:5Just as you cannot understand the path of the wind or the mystery of a tiny baby growing in its mother’s womb, so you cannot understand the activity of God, who does all things.
God’s work has no limit. His plans cannot be stopped. No miracle is too awesome for him to perform.
Psalm 119:96Even perfection has its limits, but your commands have no limit.
Isaiah 55:11It is the same with my word. I send it out, and it always produces fruit. It will accomplish all I want it to, and it will prosper everywhere I send it.
God’s Word has no limit. We can never master all it has to offer us.
Deuteronomy 10:14“The highest heavens and the earth and everything in it all belong to the Lord your God.”
Psalm 50:10“All the animals of the forest are mine, and I own the cattle on a thousand hills.”
God’s resources have no limit. No need is too great for him to provide for and supply.
Hebrews 7:26-28He [Jesus] is the kind of high priest we need because he is holy and blameless, unstained by sin. He has been set apart from sinners and has been given the highest place of honor in heaven. Unlike those other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices every day. They did this for their own sins first and then for the sins of the people. But Jesus did this once for all when he offered himself as the sacrifice for the people’s sins. The law appointed high priests who were limited by human weakness. But after the law was given, God appointed his Son with an oath, and his Son has been made the perfect High Priest forever.
Hebrews 10:12Our High Priest offered himself to God as a single sacrifice for sins, good for all time. Then he sat down in the place of honor at God’s right hand.
1 Peter 1:18-19You know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And the ransom he paid was not mere gold or silver. It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God.
God’s perfection has no limit. No standard is too high for him to meet. This is why Jesus’ sacrifice is limitless for those who trust in him. His endless perfection pays for all our sinfulness for all time.
Psalm 86:5O Lord, you are so good, so ready to forgive, so full of unfailing love for all who ask for your help.
Psalm 103:3He forgives all my sins and heals all my diseases.
Isaiah 1:18“Come now, let’s settle this,” says the Lord. “Though your sins are like scarlet, I will make them as white as snow. Though they are red like crimson, I will make them as white as wool.”
Ezekiel 18:22“All their past sins will be forgotten, and they will live because of the righteous things they have done.”
Joel 2:32Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved, for some on Mount Zion in Jerusalem will escape, just as the Lord has said. These will be among the survivors whom the Lord has called.
Matthew 12:31-32“So I tell you, every sin and blasphemy can be forgiven—except blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, which will never be forgiven. Anyone who speaks against the Son of Man can be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven, either in this world or in the world to come.”
Mark 3:28-30“All sin and blasphemy can be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven. This is a sin with eternal consequences.” He told them this because they were saying, “He’s possessed by an evil spirit.”
Luke 12:10“Anyone who speaks against the Son of Man can be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.”
Luke 24:47“It was also written that this message would be proclaimed in the authority of his name to all the nations, beginning in Jerusalem: ‘There is forgiveness of sins for all who repent.’”
Ephesians 1:7He [God] is so rich in kindness and grace that he purchased our freedom with the blood of his Son and forgave our sins.
Colossians 1:14He [God] has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son, who purchased our freedom and forgave our sins.
God’s forgiveness has no limit. No sin too awful for him to forgive. The only limitation to us being forgiven is our willingness to accept his free and gracious offer of forgiveness. God will not force us to enter a relationship with him. If we directly insult and reject the callings of his Holy Spirit, we are rejecting his loving offer. This is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, the only unforgivable sin.
