Why are leaders held to a different standard of accountability?

Jeremiah 23:1-2“What sorrow awaits the leaders of my people—the shepherds of my sheep—for they have destroyed and scattered the very ones they were expected to care for,” says the Lord. Therefore, this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says to these shepherds: “Instead of caring for my flock and leading them to safety, you have deserted them and driven them to destruction. Now I will pour out judgment on you for the evil you have done to them.”

Hebrews 13:17Obey your spiritual leaders, and do what they say. Their work is to watch over your souls, and they are accountable to God. Give them reason to do this with joy and not with sorrow. That would certainly not be for your benefit.

James 3:1Not many of you should become teachers in the church, for we who teach will be judged more strictly.

One of the mistakes leaders make is thinking they are somehow exempt from the standards that apply to everyone else. Consequently, they are more vulnerable to pride and temptation. When leaders give in to this kind of thinking, they lose credibility with others and put both their work and relationships in jeopardy. God holds leaders to a higher standard because others depend on them for direction and support.
