Isaiah 64:6We are all infected and impure with sin. When we display our righteous deeds, they are nothing but filthy rags. Like autumn leaves, we wither and fall, and our sins sweep us away like the wind.

Galatians 2:16We know that a person is made right with God by faith in Jesus Christ, not by obeying the law. And we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we might be made right with God because of our faith in Christ, not because we have obeyed the law. For no one wil ever be made right with God by obeying the law.

Galatians 3:11It is clear that no one can be made right with by trying to keep the law. For the Scriptures say, “It is through faith that a righteous person has life.”

The Bible makes it clear that we can never atone for our own sins, making things up with God. Trying to pay God back with good deeds is like trying to pay a debt with filthy rags. That would be worthless and offensive to God.

John 3:16“For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.”

Romans 3:22We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are.

The only way we can be made right with God is by trusting in Jesus Christ to save us. We must trust that Jesus has paid the penalty for our sins and has given us his righteousness. This is a free gift that we could never earn but that has been given to us purely because of God’s grace and love.

Romans 6:15-16Since God’s grace has set us free from the law, does that mean we can go on sinning? Of course not! Don’t you realize that you become a slave of whatever you choose to obey? You can be a slave to sin, which leads to death, or you can choose to obey God, which leads to righteous living.

Romans 12:1-2I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

Galatians 5:13You have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love.

Once we have been saved by our relationship with Christ, we are free from the bonds of sin. God calls us to live holy lives in response to what he has done for us. Putting away immorality and turning to righteous living does not grant us favor in God’s eyes or make us any more saved. It is a response of love and thankfulness toward the God who called us from death to life.
