When is hurrying unwise?

Joshua 8:14When the king of Ai saw the Israelites across the valley, he and all his army hurried out early in the morning and attacked the Israelites at a place overlooking the Jordan Valley. But he didn’t realize there was an ambush behind the town.

We should take the necessary time to assess a situation that requires a response. When we hurry to act without checking our assumptions, we may make some very serious mistakes.

Judges 11:31“I will give to the Lord whatever comes out of my house to meet me when I return in triumph. I will sacrifice it as a burnt offering.”

Ecclesiastes 5:2Don’t make rash promises, and don’t be hasty in bringing matters before God. After all, God is in heaven, and you are here on earth. So let your words be few.

We should think carefully before making promises.

Proverbs 13:3Those who control their tongue will have a long life; opening your mouth can ruin everything.

Proverbs 14:29People with understanding control their anger; a hot temper shows great foolishness.

James 1:19Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry.

We should be slow to speak, especially in an emotional situation. A hurried, angry response will only lead to more trouble.

Proverbs 19:2Enthusiasm without knowledge is no good; haste makes mistakes.

Taking time to plan carefully is better than moving too quickly.
