What is the value of a humble spirit?

Matthew 18:4“So anyone who becomes as humble as this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven.”

Humility is true strength, for its effects reach into the Kingdom of Heaven. Pride is true weakness, for it reaches no further than our fleeting experience in this life.

James 4:6-10He [God] gives grace generously. As the Scriptures say, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world. Let there be tears for what you have done. Let there be sorrow and deep grief. Let there be sadness instead of laughter, and gloom instead of joy. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor.

Humility is essential for recognizing the sin in our lives. Whereas pride gives the devil the key to our hearts, humility gives God the key. In place of pride, God grows in us a humility that comes from godly sorrow for sin. Openly admitting that we need God and seeking his forgiveness is the first step to defeating pride.

2 Samuel 22:28“You rescue the humble, but your eyes watch the proud and humiliate them.”

God rescues the humble.

Daniel 10:12Then he said, “Don’t be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day you began to pray for understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your request has been heard in heaven. I have come in answer to your prayer.”

God listens to the prayers of the humble.

Proverbs 15:33Fear of the Lord teaches wisdom; humility precedes honor.

God honors the humble.

Matthew 23:12“Those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

God exalts the humble.

Deuteronomy 8:16“He [the Lord] fed you with manna in the wilderness, a food unknown to your ancestors. He did this to humble you and test you for your own good.”

Humility strengthens our character, for our own good.

Proverbs 11:2Pride leads to disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.

Proverbs 12:15Fools think their own way is right, but the wise listen to others. Humility leads to wisdom.

Humility leads to true wisdom and opens the door to getting godly advice.
