In what ways was Jesus humble?

Luke 2:6-7While they were there, the time came for her baby to be born. She gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him snugly in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no lodging available for them.

Jesus was born in a stable to a relatively poor couple. God wanted Jesus to have a humble birth as a sign that his offer of salvation is for everyone, regardless of race, class, or socio-economic position.

Zechariah 9:9Rejoice, O people of Zion! Shout in triumph, O people of Jerusalem! Look, your king is coming to you. He is righteous and victorious, yet he is humble, riding on a donkey—riding on a donkey’s colt.

Jesus was King of kings, yet on his royal ride into Jerusalem when the crowds proclaimed him king (read Matthew 21:1-11), he sat on a lowly donkey.

John 1:1-3In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. He existed in the beginning with God. God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him.

John 13:3Jesus knew that the Father had given him authority over everything and that he had come from God and would return to God.

Hebrews 2:9What we do see is Jesus, who for a little while was given a position “a little lower than the angels”; and because he suffered death for us, he is now “crowned with glory and honor.” Yes, by God’s grace, Jesus tasted death for everyone.

Jesus had all the glory and honor of sitting at God’s right hand, but for our sakes he gave that up to die a criminal’s death in our world so we could be saved from eternal punishment and have eternal life with him.

Matthew 11:29“Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

John 13:3-5Jesus knew that the Father had given him authority over everything and that he had come from God and would return to God. So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him. . . . After washing their feet, he put on his robe again and sat down and asked, “Do you understand what I was doing? You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and you are right, because that’s what I am. And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you.”

Jesus is the ultimate example of gentleness and humility. His way of dealing with and teaching people demonstrates true humility. Foot-washing was considered the most menial of tasks, reserved only for the lowest of slaves. Jesus, God’s Son himself, cared more about serving other’s needs than about claiming his rightful glory. Studying the life of Jesus will reveal true humility.

Philippians 2:5-11You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross. Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Jesus was God, yet he made himself nothing and suffered death on the Cross for all who believe in him.
