In what ways does humility help me serve God better?

Philippians 2:5-8You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.

Humility is the pathway to service. True humility results from understanding who we are and who God is. A patient who regains health through a physician’s care is more humble because he realizes his vulnerability. Likewise, we are humbled when we realize how God healed our souls and we recognize our complete dependence on him. When we do, we are happy to serve our Lord in any way he asks.

Proverbs 3:5-6Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.

John 21:21-22Peter asked Jesus, “What about him, Lord?” Jesus replied, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? As for you, follow me.”

James 4:13-15Look here, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we are going to a certain town and will stay there a year. We will do business there and make a profit.” How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while, then it’s gone. What you ought to say is, “If the Lord wants us to, we will live and do this or that.”

Humility leads to trusting in God and following his plans. We may have a glorious vision of how God can use our lives as a testimony for him—but that vision may not be the same as God’s. God is creating a much larger testimony to his glory than our individual life stories. Each of us are a part of his Great Story; and even if we don’t understand how, God is using us to make that story even greater. Humility is trusting in that plan and taking each step in faith, even when we cannot see where God is leading or why.
