How can humility help me deal with sin?
James 4:6-10He [God] gives grace generously. As the Scriptures say, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world. Let there be tears for what you have done. Let there be sorrow and deep grief. Let there be sadness instead of laughter, and gloom instead of joy. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor.
Humility is essential to recognizing and confronting the sin in our lives. Satan uses pride to blind us, manipulate us, and push us toward sin. When we embrace humility, we take away Satan’s strongest tool and open ourselves to God’s work in us. Humility leads to a godly sorrow for sin, which leads to repentance and grateful acceptance of Christ’s salvation. Humility also inspires us to trust and obey Jesus as our Lord. Humility helps us to recognize and confront ongoing sin patterns in our lives. It fills us with a gratitude for what God has done. It reminds us of our need to rely on God’s strength. Through humility, we learn to love, honor, and follow God more intimately.
