What might be the result of being humiliated?

Psalm 44:15We can’t escape the constant humiliation; shame is written across our faces.

Humiliation can perpetuate itself, so we must deal with its causes before it consumes us.

Lamentations 1:8Jerusalem has sinned greatly, so she has been tossed away like a filthy rag. All who once honored her now despise her, for they have seen her stripped naked and humiliated. All she can do is groan and hide her face.

Humiliation may cause us to withdraw from others.

Hebrews 12:15Look after each other so that none of you fails to receive the grace of God. Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble you, corrupting many.

Humiliation can cause bitterness. Bitterness, if allowed to fester and grow, will overshadow all we do and render us useless in serving God. Releasing bitterness isn’t easy. Talking about forgiveness is easier than actually forgiving. But only when we release our bitterness can God’s Holy Spirit work freely in our lives and help us start anew.

Numbers 13:32-33So they spread this bad report about the land among the Israelites: “The land we traveled through and explored will devour anyone who goes to live there. All the people we saw were huge. We even saw giants there, the descendants of Anak. Next to them we felt like grasshoppers, and that’s what they thought, too!”

Numbers 32:7, 9“Why do you want to discourage the rest of the people of Israel from going across to the land the Lord has given them?” . . . After they went up to the valley of Eshcol and explored the land, they discouraged the people of Israel from entering the land the Lord was giving them.

Deuteronomy 1:28“Where can we go? Our brothers have demoralized us with their report. They tell us, ‘The people of the land are taller and more powerful than we are, and their towns are large, with walls rising high into the sky! We even saw giants there—the descendants of Anak!’”

Humiliation can lead to discouragement.

Proverbs 12:4A worthy wife is a crown for her husband, but a disgraceful woman is like cancer in his bones.

Isaiah 47:3You will be naked and burdened with shame. I will take vengeance against you without pity.”

Humiliation is burdensome and weakens us.
