Is the Holy Spirit the same as my conscience?

1 Timothy 4:2-3These people are hypocrites and liars, and their consciences are dead. They will say it is wrong to be married and wrong to eat certain foods. But God created those foods to be eaten with thanks by faithful people who know the truth.

Titus 1:15Everything is pure to those whose hearts are pure. But nothing is pure to those who are corrupt and unbelieving, because their minds and consciences are corrupted.

Hebrews 2:14-15Because God’s children are human beings—made of flesh and blood—the Son also became flesh and blood. For only as a human being could he die, and only by dying could he break the power of the devil, who had the power of death. Only in this way could he set free all who have lived their lives as slaves to the fear of dying.

Everyone—believer or unbeliever—has a conscience. Our consciences are an inborn instinct of what is right and wrong, planted by God. But our consciences are not infallible. Sometimes, they become numbed to evil and corrupted. Other times, they become judgmental about matters that aren’t even sinful, crippling us with guilt and shame. Unlike our conscience, the Holy Spirit is perfectly good and incorruptible. When our conscience speaks, we should listen with discernment. It may be drawing something important to our attention. When the Holy Spirit speaks, however, we should always obey. Much of spiritual maturity is learning to distinguish the Spirit’s voice.
