How can I be happy when faced with difficult circumstances?

2 Corinthians 12:9-10Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me. That’s why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

James 1:2-4Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.

God uses adversity to grow us in faith, perseverance, and spiritual maturity. We can always rejoice in what we will gain through our struggles.

James 1:12God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation. Afterward they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.

1 Peter 4:12-13Dear friends, don’t be surprised at the fiery trials you are going through, as if something strange were happening to you. Instead, be very glad—for these trials make you partners with Christ in his suffering, so that you will have the wonderful joy of seeing his glory when it is revealed to all the world.

God promises a greater reward for those who endure difficult circumstances because of their faith. Temporary suffering will be replaced by a greater joy that lasts forever. Anticipating these rewards makes us happier even in the midst of adversity.

Romans 5:2Because of our faith, Christ has brought us into this place of undeserved privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God’s glory.

Hebrews 10:34You suffered along with those who were thrown into jail, and when all you owned was taken from you, you accepted it with joy. You knew there were better things waiting for you that will last forever.

Hope in God’s promises of eternal life can make us happy because we know that what we are presently going through will one day end.

Acts 5:41The apostles left the high council rejoicing that God had counted them worthy to suffer disgrace for the name of Jesus.

When we live in such a way that even our suffering brings honor to Jesus, he has a special place of honor for us that will bring us a deep sense of joy.

Daniel 12:3“Those who are wise will shine as bright as the sky, and those who lead many to righteousness will shine like the stars forever.”

Matthew 5:16“In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.”

We can be happy because we know this world is not all there is. We know something better is coming. We should practice letting God’s light shine through us. Then, others will see that no matter what’s happening in the world around us, we are happy in the knowledge of a future in heaven.

Matthew 6:19-21“Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.”

True happiness comes from the confident assurance that what is really valuable is waiting for us in heaven. We can hoard material possessions here on earth and have little waiting for us in heaven, or we can send our wealth on ahead for eternal enjoyment by obeying and serving God right now.
