How should I go about being good?
Psalm 119:40I long to obey your commandments! Renew my life with your goodness.
The Scriptures make clear what God desires and knows to be best for us. To live according to God’s Word is to live according to his will, and that is living a good life.
Job 1:1There once was a man named Job who lived in the land of Uz. He was blameless—a man of complete integrity. He feared God and stayed away from evil.
Romans 12:9Don’t just pretend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good.
Job followed a plan for pursuing goodness that is simple in design yet so difficult to practice. When we avoid evil and honor God, we become more like God, the only perfect representation of what is good.
1 Samuel 24:9-10Then he [David] shouted to Saul, “Why do you listen to the people who say I am trying to harm you? This very day you can see with your own eyes it isn’t true. For the Lord placed you at my mercy back there in the cave. Some of my men told me to kill you, but I spared you. For I said, ‘I will never harm the king—he is the Lord’s anointed one.’”
Romans 12:21Don’t let evil conquer you, but conquer evil by doing good.
Returning good for evil is a real victory for good.
Micah 6:8The Lord has told you what is good, and this is what he requires of you: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.
1 Timothy 5:10She must be well respected by everyone because of the good she has done. Has she brought up her children well? Has she been kind to strangers and served other believers humbly? Has she helped those who are in trouble? Has she always been ready to do good?
Humility and kindness are marks of goodness.
