What does being a godly person mean?

Ezra 7:10Ezra had determined to study and obey the Law of the Lord and to teach those decrees and regulations to the people of Israel.

Psalm 119:103How sweet your words taste to me; they are sweeter than honey.

2 Timothy 3:14-17You must remain faithful to the things you have been taught. You know they are true, for you know you can trust those who taught you. You have been taught the holy Scriptures from childhood, and they have given you the wisdom to receive the salvation that comes by trusting in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.

Titus 1:1-3I have been sent to proclaim faith to those God has chosen and to teach them to know the truth that shows them how to live godly lives. This truth gives them confidence that they have eternal life, which God—who does not lie—promised them before the world began. And now at just the right time he has revealed this message, which we announce to everyone. It is by the command of God our Savior that I have been entrusted with this work for him.

A godly person loves God’s Word, takes it to heart, lives it out, and teaches it to others.

Ephesians 6:18Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.

Philippians 4:6Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.

1 Thessalonians 5:17Never stop praying.

A godly person is a person of prayer.

Ezra 8:21I gave orders for all of us to fast and humble ourselves before our God. We prayed that he would give us a safe journey and protect us, our children, and our goods as we traveled.

Godly people naturally humble themselves before God. We understand our identity as creatures only in relation to God, who is our Creator.

Galatians 5:22-23The Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Godly people have the Holy Spirit working in them, instilling within them the qualities of God’s character.

Leviticus 11:44-45“For I am the Lord your God. You must consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy. . . . For I, the Lord, am the one who brought you up from the land of Egypt, that I might be your God. Therefore, you must be holy because I am holy.”

Psalm 97:10You who love the Lord, hate evil! He protects the lives of his godly people and rescues them from the power of the wicked.

2 Peter 3:11-12Since everything around us is going to be destroyed like this, what holy and godly lives you should live, looking forward to the day of God and hurrying it along.

Godly people pursue holiness and hate sin.

1 John 4:7-8Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God. Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God. But anyone who does not love does not know God, for God is love.

Love is central to God’s character, and if we fail to show love to God and other people, we cannot be truly godly.
