What are some practical ways of living today for the future?

Psalm 32:8The Lord says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you.”

Psalm 73:24You guide me with your counsel, leading me to a glorious destiny.

We can access God’s counsel daily. We can’t see the next step in the future, but the Lord God sees the whole pathway that lies ahead of us. We should ask him to direct us.

Psalm 37:37Look at those who are honest and good, for a wonderful future awaits those who love peace.

Proverbs 24:14Wisdom is sweet to your soul. If you find it, you will have a bright future, and your hopes will not be cut short.

We should seek to be wise, honest, good, and peace loving. We cannot be truly wise on our own, however; we need God’s wisdom from his Word. We can’t be truly good, honest, or peace loving without being redeemed, saved, and washed clean by the Lord’s salvation. We will then be good because he is good, honest because he is perfect, and peace loving because he is peace.

1 Timothy 4:8“Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come.”

Strengthening our character has benefits in the short-term, the long term, and even eternity. Just as an athlete strengthens their muscles through daily training and healthy eating, we can strengthen our character through godly habits.

Matthew 6:19-21“Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.”

Matthew 19:21Jesus told him, “If you want to be perfect, go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

Luke 16:9“Here’s the lesson: Use your worldly resources to benefit others and make friends. Then, when your earthly possessions are gone, they will welcome you to an eternal home.”

Helping others and building relationships is a wise investment for the future. Unlike earthly riches, people have lasting value throughout life and into eternity.
