Is real contentment and satisfaction even possible in this life?

Philippians 4:11-14I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength. Even so, you have done well to share with me in my present difficulty.

Contentment and satisfaction are possible in this life because we can find our strength in Christ, despite our personal crises, setbacks, economic conditions, or other challenges.

2 Corinthians 12:8-10Three different times I begged the Lord to take it away. Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me. That’s why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

Paul had what he called a “thorn in my flesh.” This could have made him discontented, frustrated, and unfulfilled, but he discovered that God could (and would) use his weakness to advance the gospel. Paul found contentment and satisfaction in this life while experiencing “insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles” as he carried out God’s plan for him.

1 Timothy 6:6-10True godliness with contentment is itself great wealth. After all, we brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can’t take anything with us when we leave it. So if we have enough food and clothing, let us be content. But people who long to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many foolish and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving money, have wandered from the true faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows.

Many people, even Christians, pursue fulfillment in financial gain and other “foolish and harmful desires.” But true wealth and fulfillment are found only in godliness, giving all we are and have to God and trusting him for the outcome. We only live once on this earth; let us live it for Christ.
