What are some of God’s principles for financial health?

Proverbs 21:17Those who love pleasure become poor; those who love wine and luxury will never be rich.

Living a lifestyle beyond our means will lead to financial stress. Learning to say no and do without builds financial discipline, which relieves the stress. We cannot spend more than we earn for very long before we find ourselves in trouble.

Proverbs 13:11Wealth from get-rich-quick schemes quickly disappears; wealth from hard work grows over time.

Trying to get rich quickly usually backfires. Instead, we should dedicate ourselves to hard work over time. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Proverbs 22:7Just as the rich rule the poor, so the borrower is servant to the lender.

Undisciplined use of credit is a recipe for ruin.

Proverbs 23:20-21Do not carouse with drunkards or feast with gluttons, for they are on their way to poverty, and too much sleep clothes them in rags.

We should take care not to become wasteful or self-indulgent with the resources God has entrusted to us.

Proverbs 22:26-27Don’t agree to guarantee another person’s debt or put up security for someone else. If you can’t pay it, even your bed will be snatched from under you.

If we co-sign a note, we should be absolutely sure that we will be able to repay the entire debt (including interest) if the friend defaults on the loan. Otherwise, we will be putting ourselves and the family at risk.

Proverbs 6:10-11A little extra sleep, a little more slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest—then poverty will pounce on you like a bandit; scarcity will attack you like an armed robber.

Initiative, energy, and self-discipline are essential for financial health. Laziness lures us into financial trouble.
