Why is eternity so difficult to understand?

Psalm 90:1-4Lord, through all the generations you have been our home! Before the mountains were born, before you gave birth to the earth and the world, from beginning to end, you are God. You turn people back to dust, saying, “Return to dust, you mortals!” For you, a thousand years are as a passing day, as brief as a few night hours.

We cannot understand eternity, or anything infinite, because we are mortals, limited by time and space. The finite cannot comprehend the infinite.

Psalm 139:6Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand!

God and all his attributes are far beyond our ability to fully comprehend.

Isaiah 46:9-10“Remember the things I have done in the past. For I alone am God! I am God, and there is none like me. Only I can tell you the future before it even happens. Everything I plan will come to pass, for I do whatever I wish.”

Jude 1:25All glory to him who alone is God, our Savior through Jesus Christ our Lord. All glory, majesty, power, and authority are his before all time, and in the present, and beyond all time! Amen.

Because of our human limitations, we cannot conceive of something with no beginning. Regarding time, if someone were to say, “That was first,” we wonder, What was before that? The same is true with space. If someone were to say, “The universe is expanding,” we think, Into what? Everything in our experience has limits. This is not so with God.
