Why should someone want to be an elder or a deacon?

Ephesians 4:11-13These are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ. This will continue until we all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God’s Son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ.

1 Timothy 3:1This is a trustworthy saying: “If someone aspires to be a church leader, he desires an honorable position.”

1 Timothy 4:14Do not neglect the spiritual gift you received through the prophecy spoken over you when the elders of the church laid their hands on you.

All believes are given spiritual gifts by the Holy Spirit, and we should exercise those gifts in the Body of Christ, both the universal church and our local church. Some believers are given gifts that help them guide and serve the church from leadership positions. When someone has been given one of these gifts, then they enjoy leading and serving God’s people.
