How do we recover from disillusionment?

Psalm 119:37Turn my eyes from worthless things, and give me life through your word.

Acts 14:15“We have come to bring you the Good News that you should turn from these worthless things and turn to the living God, who made heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them.”

Ephesians 5:11Take no part in the worthless deeds of evil and darkness; instead, expose them.

We should ask God to help us turn from focusing on what is meaningless and turn to what is satisfying and fulfilling.

Deuteronomy 31:8“Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord will personally go ahead of you. He will be with you; he will neither fail you nor abandon you.”

Joshua 1:9“This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

Psalm 43:5Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again—my Savior and my God!

Psalm 94:19When doubts filled my mind, your comfort gave me renewed hope and cheer.

Psalm 119:25I lie in the dust; revive me by your word.

Hosea 12:6So now, come back to your God. Act with love and justice, and always depend on him.

Micah 7:7As for me, I look to the Lord for help. I wait confidently for God to save me, and my God will certainly hear me.

2 Corinthians 1:12We can say with confidence and a clear conscience that we have lived with a God-given holiness and sincerity in all our dealings. We have depended on God’s grace, not on our own human wisdom. That is how we have conducted ourselves before the world, and especially toward you.

Hebrews 6:18-19So God has given both his promise and his oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us. This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God’s inner sanctuary.

1 Peter 1:21Through Christ you have come to trust in God. And you have placed your faith and hope in God because he raised Christ from the dead and gave him great glory.

We can begin by placing our faith and hope confidently in God’s character, God’s Word, and God’s presence. Confusion over knowing what to do then becomes confidence in knowing what God wants us to do.

Colossians 2:19-23He holds the whole body together with its joints and ligaments, and it grows as God nourishes it. You have died with Christ, and he has set you free from the spiritual powers of this world. So why do you keep on following the rules of the world, such as, “Don’t handle! Don’t taste! Don’t touch!”? Such rules are mere human teachings about things that deteriorate as we use them. These rules may seem wise because they require strong devotion, pious self-denial, and severe bodily discipline. But they provide no help in conquering a person’s evil desires.

We receive our nourishment and strength from God.

Joshua 14:8“But my brothers who went with me frightened the people from entering the Promised Land. For my part, I wholeheartedly followed the Lord my God.”

We must follow God completely.

Philippians 3:7-9I once thought these things were valuable, but now I consider them worthless because of what Christ has done. Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ and become one with him. I no longer count on my own righteousness through obeying the law; rather, I become righteous through faith in Christ. For God’s way of making us right with himself depends on faith.

We must treasure Christ’s personal gift of salvation.
