What are the consequences of sin?

Ezekiel 3:20“If righteous people turn away from their righteous behavior and ignore the obstacles I put in their way, they will die.”

Romans 5:12When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned.

Romans 6:23The wages of sin is death.

The greatest consequence of sin is death, which leads to eternal separation from God.

Genesis 3:6-7, 16-17The woman was convinced. She saw that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious, and she wanted the wisdom it would give her. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it, too. At that moment their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness. So they sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves. . . . Then [God] said to the woman, “I will sharpen the pain of your pregnancy, and in pain you will give birth. Sin has been wrong since the first two people disobeyed in Eden, and it always produces bad consequences in the end. Hardship and difficulty are just some of the earthly consequences of sin. Are you willing to pay the price for a sinful action? God does not prevent you from acting foolishly, but he allows you to experience the consequences of your foolishness.

Jeremiah 11:8“‘Your ancestors did not listen or even pay attention. Instead, they stubbornly followed their own evil desires. And because they refused to obey, I brought upon them all the curses described in this covenant.’”

Sin invites the full impact of God’s warnings, which often includes his punishment. Sometimes God’s punishment is immediate; sometimes he delays it.

Psalm 7:14-16The wicked conceive evil; they are pregnant with trouble and give birth to lies. They dig a deep pit to trap others, then fall into it themselves. The trouble they make for others backfires on them. The violence they plan falls on their own heads.

If you plan evil for someone else, one consequence may be that it will come back around to destroy you.

Proverbs 18:21The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences.

James 3:2-6Indeed, we all make many mistakes. For if we could control our tongues, we would be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way. We can make a large horse go wherever we want by means of a small bit in its mouth. And a small rudder makes a huge ship turn wherever the pilot chooses to go, even though the winds are strong. In the same way, the tongue is a small thing that makes grand speeches. But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire. And among all the parts of the body, the tongue is a flame of fire. It is a whole world of wickedness, corrupting your entire body. It can set your whole life on fire, for it is set on fire by hell itself.
