What if I’m married but we’re not compatible?
Matthew 19:6“Since they are no longer two but one, let no one split apart what God has joined together.”
1 Corinthians 7:12-13, 16Now, I will speak to the rest of you, though I do not have a direct command from the Lord. If a fellow believer has a wife who is not a believer and she is willing to continue living with him, he must not leave her. And if a believing woman has a husband who is not a believer and he is willing to continue living with her, she must not leave him. . . . Don’t you wives realize that your husbands might be saved because of you? And don’t you husbands realize that your wives might be saved because of you?
Colossians 3:14Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony.
Your commitment to each other is more important than your level of compatibility. If you are already married, be careful to focus more on your commitment than on your compatibility, because there may be other people you feel more compatible with than your spouse, which will tempt you to leave him or her. The Bible is clear, let no one, even someone you’re more compatible with, separate you and your spouse. When you are joined by God, you share a bond stronger than compatibility. You should also work to become more compatible by taking more interest in each other’s daily life and struggles.
Genesis 2:20[Adam] gave names to all the livestock, all the birds of the sky, and all the wild animals. But still there was no helper just right for him.
Before God created Eve, Adam spent time in the Garden of Eden with only animals for companions. God recognized the deep need human beings have for meaningful relationships, so he made a companion for Adam who was compatible with him in the way that animals could not be. If you are having trouble finding areas in which you are compatible with your spouse, start with the basics. Thank God that he made men and women compatible for loving relationships. How excited Adam must have been to share all the wonders of his life with his new companion Eve! Think about your life. What areas of your life can you be excited to share with your spouse?
