How important is it to have compatible values in a relationship?

2 Corinthians 6:14-16Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? Or what does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God.

2 Timothy 2:22Run from anything that stimulates youthful lusts. Instead, pursue righteous living, faithfulness, love, and peace. Enjoy the companionship of those who call on the Lord with pure hearts.

Compatibility usually means you have things in common that help you feel closer to someone. You are more of a “match.” This is usually a good thing because you share common interests and goals. However, it is important to recognize that you can share common interests with those whom you don’t share common values. And this can get you in deep trouble. Without shared values, you can be drawn to someone who is fun to be around, but who has no desire to share your devotion to God and the lifestyle that goes along with that. This is why it is important to pick your friends and your mate wisely and to find things in common with others that facilitate godliness and not sinfulness. As you seek compatibility in your relationships, don’t forget to include the importance of godly values.
