How do our differences make us compatible—whether in marriage or in the body of believers in the church?

Genesis 1:5God called the light “day” and the darkness “night.” And evening passed and morning came, marking the first day.

People often say about each other, “We’re as different as night and day.” Have you ever thought about how that might be a good thing? God, in his infinite wisdom, made daytime and nighttime work together to form one day. In the same way, you can be compatible with people who are different from you by using your differences to accomplish something whole. Embracing your differences to accomplish something significant is a wonderful picture of compatibility.

Isaiah 11:6-7In that day the wolf and the lamb will live together; the leopard will lie down with the baby goat. The calf and the yearling will be safe with the lion, and a little child will lead them all. The cow will graze near the bear. The cub and the calf will lie down together. The lion will eat hay like a cow.

Although you may fear that you and your spouse or boss or neighbor might never be compatible, take hope in the fact that God will one day restore compatibility even among the greatest of animal enemies. If God has such a wonderful plan for the animals, how much more you have to look forward to.

Ephesians 4:16He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love.

Christ designed you to have unique gifts to contribute to the body of believers. The human body is made up of separate and different parts, yet all parts are compatible, working together to sustain life. It is the same with the church, the body of believers. Each person is a separate part with a unique role to play. Your role will usually be different from the roles of others, but the beauty of it is that these differences help sustain the body of Christ and allow it to accomplish much. Sometimes, differences can enhance compatibility.
