Do I need to be compatible with someone to marry them?

Song of Songs 1:16-17You are so handsome, my love, pleasing beyond words! The soft grass is our bed; fragrant cedar branches are the beams of our house, and pleasant smelling firs are the rafters.

Song of Songs 2:10-13My lover said to me, “Rise up, my darling! Come away with me, my fair one! Look, the winter is past, and the rains are over and gone. The flowers are springing up, the season of singing birds has come, and the cooing of turtledoves fills the air. The fig trees are forming young fruit, and the fragrant grapevines are blossoming. Rise up, my darling! Come away with me, my fair one!”

These verses spoken by a man and his wife both seem to express a shared appreciation for the outdoors. Although you don’t need to be compatible in all of your interests, it is helpful to share some interests together.

2 Corinthians 6:14Don’t team up with those who are unbelievers. How can righteousness be a partner with wickedness? How can light live with darkness?

No man and woman will be compatible in everything. But there is one area in which you must be compatible: You should both believe in Jesus Christ. When someone is your partner for life and you become united as “one flesh,” it is of utmost importance for that person to share your commitment to Jesus so that together you can serve him with all your hearts.
