What attitude should I have when I take communion?

1 Corinthians 11:27-29So anyone who eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord unworthily is guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. That is why you should examine yourself before eating the bread and drinking the cup. For if you eat the bread or drink the cup without honoring the body of Christ, you are eating and drinking God’s judgment upon yourself.

Communion should not be taken lightly but rather with profound gratitude and humility before God. In this verse, Paul warned believers to spend some time preparing their heart and mind before taking the cup and bread. Before approaching communion, pause to consider where you are in your relationship with God and with others, examine your attitudes, and spend time asking yourself if there are sins that you have not dealt with and that might be hindering your relationship with God or others. After this reflection, your heart will be ready to respectfully participate in the Lord’s Supper. And you will be better able to appreciate what Jesus Christ has done on your behalf.

1 Corinthians 11:33So, my dear brothers and sisters, when you gather for the Lord’s Supper, wait for each other.

Approach communion with an attitude of sharing a spiritual bond with other believers and rejoicing together in what Christ has done for you.

Acts 2:46-47They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity—all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people.

Don’t rush through communion! Reflect on the amazing reality that the God of the universe wants a personal relationship with you. Thank him for his unfailing love, and look forward with passion and excitement to your future with him.
