Why is it important for believers to consistently meet together?
Matthew 18:20“For where two or three gather together as my followers, I am there among them.”
Jesus promises that when his followers meet, he is there with us. How wonderful to join together with others and with Jesus.
Matthew 26:26-29As they were eating, Jesus took some bread and blessed it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, “Take this and eat it, for this is my body.” And he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. He gave it to them and said, “Each of you drink from it, for this is my blood, which confirms the covenant between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice to forgive the sins of many. Mark my words—I will not drink wine again until the day I drink it new with you in my Father’s Kingdom.”
1 Corinthians 10:16-17When we bless the cup at the Lord’s Table, aren’t we sharing in the blood of Christ? And when we break the bread, aren’t we sharing in the body of Christ? And though we are many, we all eat from one loaf of bread, showing that we are one body.
1 Corinthians 11:26Every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are announcing the Lord’s death until he comes again.
Meeting together allows us to celebrate the Lord’s Supper (also called Communion or Eucharist). Jesus instituted this during the Passover festival at his Last Supper before his crucifixion, and churches continue to celebrate this in remembrance that he gave his body and blood for them.
Acts 4:24When they heard the report, all the believers lifted their voices together in prayer to God.
Acts 12:12When he realized this, he went to the home of Mary, the mother of John Mark, where many were gathered for prayer.
Hebrews 10:25Let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.
Meeting together allows us to pray together and to encourage one another to live well and to stay strong even in the face of temptation and persecution.
