How can I break away from the wrong things that hold me captive?

Proverbs 15:22Plans go wrong for lack of advice; many advisers bring success.

Matthew 5:30“And if your hand—even your stronger hand—causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.”

John 8:32“And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Romans 5:21So just as sin ruled over all people and brought them to death, now God’s wonderful grace rules instead, giving us right standing with God and resulting in eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Romans 6:7When we died with Christ we were set free from the power of sin.

Galatians 5:13, 16You have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love. . . . So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves.

Ephesians 6:13-18Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion.

Titus 2:14He gave his life to free us from every kind of sin, to cleanse us, and to make us his very own people, totally committed to doing good deeds.

God’s gracious gift of his Son, Jesus Christ, sets those who put their faith in him free from sin. He calls you to use that freedom to live rightly, and empowers you with his Holy Spirit. Knowing this, pray! And recognize that many habits require great resolve to break away from. As with all of life’s challenges, don’t hesitate to seek out godly advice and professional counsel about how to change.
