Why is it important to memorize Bible verses?

Deuteronomy 30:14The message is very close at hand; it is on your lips and in your heart so that you can obey it.

Speaking Scripture and taking it to heart are significant spiritual practices that lead to a healthy relationship with God. This becomes apparent when a God-guided life results.

Psalm 1:1-2Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night.

The practice of meditation assumes memorization. By itself, memorization may seem tedious, but it yields fruit if what has been uploaded to the mind is prayerfully considered. The deepest enjoyment of God’s Word comes from memorization that leads to obedience.

Psalm 37:31They have made God’s law their own, so they will never slip from his path.

Truly possessing God’s Word involves much more than having a copy of the Bible. Knowing it intimately through memorization and meditation leads to a life guided and owned by the Scriptures. Such a life has a remarkable capacity for not only staying on track but also regaining direction when derailments come.

Psalm 119:11I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.

Jesus exemplified the wisdom of memorizing God’s Word by quoting passages of Scripture from memory during difficult situations, including the time Satan tempted him in the wilderness (see Matthew 4). Memorizing God’s Word doesn’t prevent us from ever sinning again, but it does protect us from sin and show us the way back when we do sin.

Psalm 119:148I stay awake through the night, thinking about your promise.

When the lights are out, meditating on God’s Word will not be an option if you haven’t memorized any of it. When you can’t go to sleep, what do you think about? How much of God’s Word can you access from your mental storage?

Deuteronomy 6:6-9You must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today. Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up. Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders. Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

You will become what you fill your heart and mind with. Memorizing Scripture allows you to meditate on God’s life-changing words at any time. Doing it with children can not only be great fun, but it also passes God’s Word on to the next generation.

Matthew 4:3-4The devil came and said to [Jesus], “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become loaves of bread.” But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

Tempted by Satan in the wilderness, Jesus responded three times with Scripture. Even when Satan misused the Bible, Jesus corrected him biblically. He demonstrated throughout his ministry that he was intimately familiar with Scripture and lived in complete harmony with it.
