Do evil angels exist? If so, can they harm us?

Ephesians 6:12We are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.

James 2:19You say you have faith, for you believe that there is one God. Good for you! Even the demons believe this, and they tremble in terror.

Evil angels do exist, and they know about and fear God. Such angels are usually called “evil spirits” or “demons.”

John 8:44“For you are the children of your father the devil, and you love to do the evil things he does. He was a murderer from the beginning. He has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies.”

2 Peter 2:4God did not spare even the angels who sinned. He threw them into hell, in gloomy pits of darkness, where they are being held until the day of judgment.

1 John 3:8When people keep on sinning, it shows that they belong to the devil, who has been sinning since the beginning. But the Son of God came to destroy the works of the devil.

Angels were created by God and given a will. Amazingly, after tasting heaven, some chose to rebel against God and follow Satan.

Job 15:15“Look, God does not even trust the angels. Even the heavens are not absolutely pure in his sight.”

Matthew 25:41“Then the King will turn to those on the left and say, ‘Away with you, you cursed ones, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his demons.’”

John 12:31“The time for judging this world has come, when Satan, the ruler of this world, will be cast out.”

John 16:11“Judgment will come because the ruler of this world has already been judged.”

Revelation 12:7-9Then there was war in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon and his angels. And the dragon lost the battle, and he and his angels were forced out of heaven. This great dragon—the ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, the one deceiving the whole world—was thrown down to the earth with all his angels.

Revelation 20:10Then the devil, who had deceived them, was thrown into the fiery lake of burning sulfur, joining the beast and the false prophet. There they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

God has judged and condemned the devil, his angels (called demons), and all their followers to eternity in Hell.

Matthew 10:8“Heal the sick, raise the dead, cure those with leprosy, and cast out demons. Give as freely as you have received!”

Luke 10:18-19“Yes,” he told them, “I saw Satan fall from heaven like lightning! Look, I have given you authority over all the power of the enemy, and you can walk among snakes and scorpions and crush them. Nothing will injure you.”

Romans 16:20The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. May the grace of our Lord Jesus be with you.

Ephesians 1:19-21I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe him. This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God’s right hand in the heavenly realms. Now he is far above any ruler or authority or power or leader or anything else—not only in this world but also in the world to come.

Ephesians 6:10-13A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm.

Colossians 2:15In this way, he disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by his victory over them on the cross.

James 4:7So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Christians have authority and victory over Satan and his angels because of the victorious death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
