What are some important responsibilities of older people?

Titus 2:2-5Teach the older men to exercise self-control, to be worthy of respect, and to live wisely. They must have strong faith and be filled with love and patience. Similarly, teach the older women to live in a way that is appropriate for someone serving the Lord. They must not go around speaking evil of others and must not be heavy drinkers. Instead, they should teach others what is good. These older women must train the younger women to love their husbands and their children, to live wisely and be pure, to take care of their homes, to do good, and to be submissive to their husbands. Then they will not bring shame on the word of God.

Older people are called to be mentors of others for God’s ways of living. Those who are older have a wealth of experience and insight to share, and they should share this in a gracious and godly manner.

Deuteronomy 32:7“Remember the days of long ago; think about the generations past. Ask your father, and he will inform you. Inquire of your elders, and they will tell you.”

Psalm 71:18Now that I am old and gray, do not abandon me, O God. Let me proclaim your power to this new generation, your mighty miracles to all who come after me.

Proverbs 20:29The glory of the young is their strength; the gray hair of experience is the splendor of the old.

We can share examples of God’s active hand in both our daily and our life-long experiences. God’s work in our lives can be an encouragement to others who follow behind us. Candid recognition of our failures can also be an encouragement and help new Christians avoid some of the pitfalls we have experienced.
