How should age affect our marriage commitment?

Romans 7:2When a woman marries, the law binds her to her husband as long as he is alive. But if he dies, the laws of marriage no longer apply to her.

1 Corinthians 7:39A wife is bound to her husband as long as he lives. If her husband dies, she is free to marry anyone she wishes, but only if he loves the Lord.

The biblical standard is to be married for life. That’s why the Christian marriage ceremony has the vow, “till death do us part” (that is, “as long as we both shall live”). Marriage is meant to be a life-long commitment.

Proverbs 5:18-19Let your wife be a fountain of blessing for you. Rejoice in the wife of your youth. She is a loving deer . . . May you always be captivated by her love.

Malachi 2:15-16Didn’t the Lord make you one with your wife? In body and spirit you are his. And what does he want? Godly children from your union. So guard your heart; remain loyal to the wife of your youth. “For I hate divorce!” says the Lord, the God of Israel. “To divorce your wife is to overwhelm her with cruelty,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. “So guard your heart; do not be unfaithful to your wife.”

1 Corinthians 13:4-7Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.

Colossians 3:12-14Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony.

As we grow older, we learn that no one is perfect, that forgiveness is a powerful way to grow a relationship, and that unconditional love and commitment builds trust that makes love strong. We may not have the same infatuating love for our spouse as we had in our youth, but as we overcome struggles together, we can develop the deeper emotions of loyalty, gratitude, and enduring love.
