How can I prevent addiction in my life?
Mark 14:38“Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak.”
Romans 6:12-14Do not let sin control the way you live; do not give in to sinful desires. Do not let any part of your body become an instrument of evil to serve sin. Instead, give yourselves completely to God, for you were dead, but now you have new life. So use your whole body as an instrument to do what is right for the glory of God. Sin is no longer your master, for you no longer live under the requirements of the law. Instead, you live under the freedom of God’s grace.
Romans 12:1So, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him.

Romans 8:5-6Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit. So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace.
Romans 12:2Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

We can commit our minds to God and his concerns. It’s difficult to avoid sinful thoughts without replacing those thoughts with something else. The more we grow in our relationship with God, the more our minds will be filled with good, life-giving thoughts and desires—and temptation will have less room to fit inside.
Proverbs 4:23Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.
Proverbs 23:19-21Keep your heart on the right course. Do not carouse with drunkards or feast with gluttons, for they are on their way to poverty, and too much sleep clothes them in rags.

Commit your heart to God. Watch your affections. Giving our hearts fully to God is the highest purpose of every Christian. When we love God, we will naturally desire to obey him. Just as a strong love for one’s spouse protects against the temptation of adultery, a strong love for God guards against the temptation to sin.

We can strengthen our relationship with God through the spiritual disciplines of studying his Word and praying.

2 Timothy 2:22Run from anything that stimulates youthful lusts. Instead, pursue righteous living, faithfulness, love, and peace. Enjoy the companionship of those who call on the Lord with pure hearts.
We should choose our companions wisely. We will become like the friends we surround ourselves with, for good or for bad.
