How can I choose the right people to hold me accountable?

1 Kings 12:8-11Rehoboam rejected the advice of the older men and instead asked the opinion of the young men who had grown up with him . . . The young men replied, “This is what you should tell those complainers who want a lighter burden: ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist! Yes, my father laid heavy burdens on you, but I’m going to make them even heavier!

Not all friends are good advisers, especially if their counsel is not consistent with God’s Word.

Psalm 1:1Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers.

Proverbs 27:6Wounds from a sincere friend are better than many kisses from an enemy.

1 Corinthians 12:8To one person the Spirit gives the ability to give wise advice; to another the same Spirit gives a message of special knowledge.

Seek out friends who are especially wise, godly, and honest. Pray for God to send friends who will not hesitate to speak the truth in love.

Proverbs 13:17An unreliable messenger stumbles into trouble, but a reliable messenger brings healing.

Proverbs 25:19Putting confidence in an unreliable person in times of trouble is like chewing with a broken tooth or walking on a lame foot.

It is critical that those we expect to keep us accountable are reliable.
