What are the dangers of great abundance?

Deuteronomy 8:11-14“But that is the time to be careful! Beware that in your plenty you do not forget the Lord your God and disobey his commands, regulations, and decrees that I am giving you today. For when you have become full and prosperous and have built fine homes to live in, and when your flocks and herds have become very large and your silver and gold have multiplied along with everything else, be careful! Do not become proud at that time and forget the Lord your God, who rescued you from slavery in the land of Egypt.”

Abundance can cause us to forget God, which leads to disobeying him. We may become so comfortable that we are lulled into a spiritual slumber.

Psalm 52:7-8Look what happens to mighty warriors who do not trust in God. They trust their wealth instead and grow more and more bold in their wickedness. But I am like an olive tree, thriving in the house of God. I will always trust in God’s unfailing love.

1 Timothy 6:9-10People who long to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many foolish and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving money, have wandered from the true faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows.

Trust in an abundance of anything other than God’s love only emboldens us to greater sin. All the gold on earth cannot buy one day in heaven. All the wealth of the world cannot buy one blessing from God.

Mark 10:23Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the Kingdom of God!”

Material abundance can be a barrier to faith in God because it often breeds a false sense of security apart from God.

Ecclesiastes 5:10Those who love money will never have enough. How meaningless to think that wealth brings true happiness!

Wealth alone, regardless of the amount, can never fully satisfy. Money can cultivate cravings—the more we have, the more we want, creating a vicious cycle that never has a satisfactory conclusion.

Luke 12:15Then he said, “Beware! Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own.”

Material abundance is the wrong measure of real worth. A rich life comes from a humble walk with God. Without God, wealth is meaningless and empty.

2 Chronicles 26:15-16His fame spread far and wide, for the Lord gave him marvelous help, and he became very powerful. But when he had become powerful, he also became proud, which led to his downfall.

Material abundance can lead to the sin of pride, which leads to one’s downfall.
