Still One God

The king answered Daniel, and said, “Truly your God is the God of gods, the Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets, since you could reveal this secret.”

Daniel 2:47

The Hanging Gardens of Babylon, considered one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, were built by Nebuchadnezzar II around 600 BC. The gardens were only one of the magnificent structures built by a king who considered himself a deity to be worshiped by his people. But this king discovered that there is only one true God, who alone is worthy of worship.

On more than one occasion, Nebuchadnezzar was brought to the realization that the God of Daniel had powers that Nebuchadnezzar and his wise men did not. God revealed to Daniel the king’s dreams and their meanings and sentenced the king to a period of insanity as a correction for his prideful spirit. After each of these encounters, Nebuchadnezzar confessed that “He does according to His will” (Daniel 4:35).

When you need wisdom, remember the king who was wise enough to build beautiful gardens, but not as wise as the one true God.

The heavens declare Thy glory, Lord; in every star Thy wisdom shines.
