Sculpting The Soul

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; a good understanding have all those who do His commandments.

Psalm 111:10

The Los Angeles Times once ran a story about a student whose eyesight had begun to fail when she was seven. Later, in a high school art class, she shaped a sculpture of her four-year-old self based on her memory of an old photograph. Unable to see the image she was working from, she had to sculpt by feel alone, molding herself with the benefit of nothing but her memory of that picture and her sense of touch. Her piece ended up in a prestigious national competition.^a

When it comes to molding ourselves into what we want to be, we don’t have to work blindly. We study the Bible, discover what we should be, and then prayerfully seek to shape ourselves into the image that God desires. Meanwhile, the hands of the Master overlay our own as the Holy Spirit sculpts us into the image of Christ. When looking into the Bible, be alert for some change you can make, some improvement you can implement with His help. Sometimes the greatest growth is in the details.

If you ask me after what fashion I mould my life, and what is the model by which I would sculpture my being, I tell you, it is Christ.
