No Condemnation!

God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.

John 3:17

Our word condemn comes from a Latin term combining the prefix con (“together with”) and the verb damn. It means to pronounce judgment, to declare unfit, or to doom. It’s one of the harshest words in the English language, and it occurs seventy-five times in the Bible.

Many of these references, however, are joyful, for they tell us that Jesus saves us from condemnation. How wonderful to read, “None of those who trust in Him shall be condemned. . . . He who believes in Him is not condemned. . . . There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus” (Psalm 34:22; John 3:18; Romans 8:1). No wonder Charles Wesley wrote

No condemnation now I dread;

Jesus, and all in Him, is mine;

Alive in Him, my living Head,

And clothed in righteousness divine.
