More Solid Than Gibraltar

Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.

The Rock of Gibraltar is a massive limestone mountain on the southernmost tip of Europe’s Iberian Peninsula, standing guard over the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea. For three centuries it has played a key role as a military fortification, its base honeycombed with tunnels. “Solid as the Rock of Gibraltar” is used to describe something that cannot be moved, and the motto of the Royal Gibraltar Regiment conveys similar strength: Nulli Expugnabilis Hosti—“Conquered by No Enemy.”

The Rock of Gibraltar may never have been overcome by bombs and bullets, but it will be moved one day according to the Bible: “The elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up” (2 Peter 3:10). Mount Everest, Mount Rushmore, the Rock of Gibraltar—as impregnable as these seem, there is something yet more dependable: the Word of God. If you are looking for something to grasp hold of forever, let it be the teaching of Jesus.

Since man is created to be eternal, only the promises from the Word that will never pass away are sufficient.
