Jacob was left alone.

Genesis 32:24

It must have been a slow news day, for the headline of the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette was “Naming Your Car Assuages Loneliness.” The article was based on comments by a Tufts University professor who noticed a growing trend in car naming. “Naming is the beginning of a conversation and a relationship,” said the expert. “Many people spend a lot of time alone, and one place we spend a lot of time alone is in cars.”

One man, who named his vehicle Mimi, said he talks to his car all the time. “I’m sorry you’re so dirty,” he might say. “I have to wash you.”

As we head into the holidays, perhaps you’re already worried about spending Christmas alone. Well, you don’t have to talk to your car. When Jacob found himself alone, he wasn’t alone at all. The angel of the Lord was there, and the two wrestled until Jacob received a blessing.

We can be alone without being lonely, even at Christmas. Devote this month to earnest prayer, acknowledge His presence, and “wrestle” with the Lord about any trouble you may have.

I have a great deal of company in my house; especially in the morning, when nobody calls.
