Choose This Day

Choose This Day

As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.

Joshua 24:15

Popular singer-songwriter Bob Dylan went through a public “born again” period in the late 1970s, releasing three albums of gospel-themed songs. He even received a Grammy Award for the song “Gotta Serve Somebody,” in which he sang, “But you’re gonna have to serve somebody. . . . Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord, but you’re gonna have to serve somebody.”

Moses challenged the Israelites to choose life (by obeying God’s laws) or death (by disobeying God). Joshua challenged the next generation of Israelites to choose whom they would serve—pagan gods or the Lord. Jesus said that no man can serve two masters: “You cannot serve God and [money]” (Matthew 6:24). Life is about nothing if not about choices. From the moment we rise until the time we go to sleep, life is all about choosing. And it’s the collection of little, daily choices that eventually reveals what our “big” choices are. Choosing to follow Christ in the little things is evidence that we have given Him our whole heart.

Use today to “choose for your[self] this day whom you will serve” (Joshua 24:15). And let your actions reveal that choice to the world.

Most Christians salute the sovereignty of God but believe in the sovereignty of man.
