A Normal Day

The LORD is high above all nations, His glory above the heavens, who is like the LORD our God, who dwells on high, who humbles Himself to behold the things that are in the heavens and in the earth.

Psalm 113:4-6

What does your normal day look like? Perhaps you get up, read your Bible and pray while eating breakfast, then head to the office or begin working on your to-do list for keeping house and tending to the needs of your children. Suddenly, by special delivery courier, you receive a message that you are in violation of a new law forbidding worship of God. And the penalty is death.

What would be your first response? When that happened to Daniel in Babylon, his day didn’t change a bit. He still prayed to God three times “as was his custom” (Daniel 6:10). He didn’t even stop praying when the authorities showed up to say he wasn’t allowed to pray! When we go into “crisis mode” as a response to bad or unexpected news, it reveals the depth of our “normal” life. If the life we live every day is deeply dependent on God through prayer, worship, and Bible study, then no news can shake that foundation. We keep on praying, worshiping, and studying just as we’ve always done. Yes, the content of our prayers may change, but the content of our character doesn’t.

What is a normal day for you? Make sure it’s the kind of day that prepares you to handle the abnormal when it comes.

We ought to behave ourselves every day as though we had no dependence on any other.
