The Silence Of God

For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him.

Do our prayers really make a difference in times of crisis? Does God listen when we cry out to him? Does he see our hidden suffering? Does his silence indicate his absence? Or that he is unable to save us?

These questions roll through our minds when disaster pummels our peace, anxiety bulldozes our hope, and the unexpected upends our plans. In times like these, when it seems there’s an earthquake in our souls, we have one source of comfort and hope: God’s unchanging character as revealed to us in his Word.

The news does not comfort our hearts. The internet does not comfort our hearts. Social media does not comfort our hearts. World leaders do not comfort our hearts. Doctors do not comfort our hearts. Self-help books do not comfort our hearts. Only our God, who is King over everything, can bring true, lasting, indescribable comfort. He teaches us in his Word that he is fully aware of what’s happening in the world, and he is at work in ways our human eyes cannot see (see Proverbs 15:3; Hebrews 4:13).

Here’s what the Bible reveals about where God is when bad things happen:

• God hears when we call on his name: “In my distress I called upon the LORD; to my God I cried for help. From his temple he heard my voice, and my cry to him reached his ears” (Psalm 18:6).
• God sees when we suffer and comforts us in affliction: “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God” (2 Corinthians 1:3-4).
• God is with us in every trial: “The nations rage, the kingdoms totter; he utters his voice, the earth melts. The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress” (Psalm 46:6-7).

God’s silence does not indicate his absence. Even on the worst days, he listens, responds, and comforts. He provides, delivers, restores, and answers—even if it’s not always the way we want or expect. Prayer does make a difference, because we serve a loving, powerful God who hears those prayers.

The question is, will we persevere in prayer even when we feel like our words get stuck at the ceiling? Will we come before the Lord earnestly each day? Will we believe his immutable Word, even when our circumstances lead us to doubt? Will we lament with hope, recognizing this broken world is not our forever home and Christ has given us victory through the cross?

There may be over eight billion people inhabiting the earth, but God sees us all. Though we are powerless, he is omnipotent (see Jeremiah 32:17). Though we are unsure what to do, he is all-knowing (see 2 Chronicles 20:12). Though we cannot feel his presence, he is always with us (see Deuteronomy 31:8; Hebrews 13:5). We can wait in silence for him, resting in the assurance that our prayers will reach his heart.

Word before World God’s silence in our suffering doesn’t indicate his absence. Christ suffered on the cross so we can have hope for eternity and for the present.
