Pray Right Away

Pray in the Spirit at all times, with every kind of prayer and petition. To this end, stay alert with all perseverance in your prayers for all the saints.

“I’m praying for you.”

This simple statement goes a long way . . . when we follow through. But sometimes I’ll say this to a friend as a mere sentiment, convincing myself, It’s the thought that counts, when in reality, it’s the prayer that makes a difference.

In an effort to make sure I actually pray for someone when I say I will, I’ve made it a practice to pray right away when someone entrusts me with the cares of her heart. Rather than listening and offering my own advice or merely saying, “I’ll pray for you,” I offer to join my friend in petitioning God right then. When we really believe he is with us, he hears us, and he answers prayer (see 1 John 5:14-15), we are motivated to embrace the gift of coming directly into his presence with our requests.

This might look like praying in a public setting or sending a prayer through a text message or putting a handwritten letter in the mail. Other times it might involve sending a voice memo, making a phone call, or pausing to pray in my living room for my friend as the Holy Spirit brings her to mind.

When I began this practice of praying right away, I didn’t realize how the blessing would boomerang back and change me. The more I’ve made it a habit to intercede and pray for others, the less I worry about myself (see Philippians 4:6-7).

Committing to praying for others is like holding a megaphone to our ears and hearing the gospel message preached to our own weary hearts. Prayer changes us—the way we see, the way we work, what we love, and where we place our hope. Prayer isn’t about getting things from God; it’s about being conformed to his will (see Psalm 37:4). When we praise God for his faithfulness, petition him for his help, and press into his promises, our confidence grows and our peace multiplies (see Psalm 9:1-2; Hebrews 4:16).

Becoming a faithful prayer warrior doesn’t happen overnight; it happens one prayer at a time. You don’t need eloquent, repetitive words in order to come to God in prayer (see Matthew 6:5-8). You already have the Word of God, and Scripture holds the most powerful words we can pray. As a Christ-follower, you’ve been gifted with the Holy Spirit to help you, guide you, protect you, and pray on your behalf (see Romans 8:26-27). Because of Christ’s work on the cross, you can come before God anytime, anywhere in prayer.

When you pray for others, be comforted knowing Christ is praying for you (see Romans 8:33-34).

When you don’t know what to say, trust him to speak on your behalf (see Romans 8:26).

When you fail to follow through, remember his grace covers you (see 2 Corinthians 12:8-9).

Pray right away—bringing every need and burden to the cross—and know that God hears every word you say. He is already working.
