The One Who Has Power Over The Wind And Sea - Who is Jesus?

“The disciples were amazed. ‘Who is this man?’ they asked. ‘Even the winds and waves obey him!’” (Matthew 8:27, NLT)

“At his command the oceans dry up, and the rivers disappear. The lush pastures of Bashan and Carmel fade, and the green forests of Lebanon wither.” (Nahum 1:4, NLT)

“‘LORD, help!’ they cried in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. He calmed the storm to a whisper and stilled the waves. What a blessing was that stillness as he brought them safely into harbor!” (Psalm 107:28-30, NLT)

If you’re familiar with the Bible’s stories, you’ll probably remember the time Jesus calmed the storm. Because we read the story with hindsight, we know that Jesus is the Creator of the world who could easily overrule the laws of nature. His disciples were just learning of this power, and his identity was still a mystery. While they struggled at the oars, it never entered their minds that the solution to their struggle lay with the Creator, who was right beside them.

Although the disciples were terrified by the storm and were convinced they would drown, Jesus simply stood up and uttered, “Silence! Be still!” (Mark 4:39). At that moment, Jesus silenced the fierce gale with the power of his word. The Creator of the wind and water reined them in with just a command.

The disciples’ response of awe and worship of Jesus models an appropriate response for us when we see God at work. Sometimes our needs are great; many times they are small. Regardless, like the disciples, we can rely on Jesus when needs arise. Jesus, the Creator of the wind and sea, is ready to help us too. There may be times when we need him to cause our situations to become still. There may be moments when we need him to calm our anxieties by whispering “Be still” to our hearts. Just as he calmed the waves, he will comfort us and give us what we need to survive the storm.
