Humility And Courage

Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

James 4:10

I remember some of my first few jobs—working in a donut shop, then later at a grocery store. They definitely were not glamorous jobs! But they played a valuable role in teaching me responsibility and accountability—and humility.

Most first jobs do that. They teach us valuable skills we use later in life. Even King David had some early not-so-fun jobs. He tended sheep. Then he became Saul’s private musician and armor-bearer. Not the most prestigious role for a future king, but this exercise in humility gave David a real-life education.

David even became an errand boy, charged to carry lunch to his brothers who were fighting the Philistines on the front lines of a battle. And then, God used David’s position as a delivery boy to introduce him to the giant Goliath.

By the time David killed Goliath, God had used all of his first jobs to equip him with the skills, strengths, and courage to take out the giant. In the same way, God is using the here and now to prepare you for your future too. So humble yourself, because everything you’re learning now He will use to help you fulfill His call on your life.

God, I humble myself before You, trusting that You will lift me up at the right time.
