God Qualifies You

The LORD did not set his affection on you [Israel] and choose you because you were more numerous than other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples. But it was because the LORD loved you and kept the oath he swore to your ancestors.

Deuteronomy 7:7–8

Those God calls, He qualifies—including you, me, and Bible heroes like Moses and Gideon. They were far from qualified when they first started out.

God chose Moses to tell Pharaoh to let His people go (Exodus 3–4). Frightened, Moses insisted that he was not eloquent and that this powerful leader wouldn’t listen to him. When Moses finally did as God told him to, God was clearly with him, sending plagues, parting the Red Sea, and providing food, water, and clothing for forty years.

God referred to Gideon as a “mighty warrior” and told him to save Israel from Midian (Judges 6–8). But Gideon was hiding from the enemy, and he couldn’t imagine how God could use a coward like him to fight for his people. God promised He’d be strong where Gideon was weak, and He enabled Gideon, with only 300 soldiers, to defeat the Midianite army of more than 135,000 (Judges 8:10).

God chooses the unlikely to do the unimaginable—and He always qualifies those He calls.

Lord, how amazing that You choose the unqualified—like me—and make me strong to do the unimaginable. Thank You for the power of Your redemptive love!
