El Elyon Will Fulfill His Purposes For Your Life

“Blessed be Abram by God Most High [El Elyon], Creator of heaven and earth. And praise be to God Most High [El Elyon], who delivered your enemies into your hand.” (Genesis 14:19-20, NIV)

“I cry out to God Most High [El Elyon], to God who will fulfill his purpose for me.” (Psalm 57:2, NLT)

My husband and I have worked as career missionaries for more than 30 years. Over that time, God has placed us in numerous faith-testing situations. Often, those situations involve circumstances that, humanly speaking, stack the odds against us. One such situation happened when I sensed God nudge me to attend my first conference for writers.

Attending this conference was neither cheap nor convenient. It involved a 10-hour car ride, two ferries, and a flight from Washington state to Florida. It also involved the cost of the conference registration plus hotel accommodation.

We were working at a year-round Christian summer camp at the time and received no salary. Instead, we depended on financial donors to cover the expenses needed for our family of five.

To be fair, God always provided for our needs, but we had precious little left for anything not considered necessary. So, when I sensed Him nudge me to attend this conference, my immediate thought was fear-based: “No. I’ve never traveled that far alone, and besides, I can’t afford it.”

But God wouldn’t let up. He pressed me until I said yes, and then He proved that He could fulfill His purposes even when the odds seemed impossible. One example, for instance, was when He reunited me with a Bible college friend who’d become a travel agent. It happened at a teeny church on an island, 20 years after our graduation.

I told her about the conference and asked her to find me the least expensive flight to Florida on certain dates. Shortly after she set to work, a sale price from Seattle to Orlando popped onto her screen with those exact dates. She phoned and said, “You can fly for about $150 round-trip. I’ve never seen such a deal! Give me your credit card number right now!”

A half-hour later, my friend received notice that this price was a mistake. However, all tickets already purchased would be honored.

The mistake wasn’t a mistake in God’s eyes. He has ultimate authority over our circumstances, and we can rest in His sovereignty. When we walk in surrender to His ways, we needn’t fear impossibilities because El Elyon is boss and has the final say.

This Hebrew name, El Elyon, translates as “Most High God” and “God Most High” and appears first in Genesis 14. In this passage, we learn that Abram and 318 men from his household had chased, fought, and defeated four enemy armies who’d kidnapped his nephew Lot and ransacked Sodom and Gomorrah.

Imagine. Abram’s men were probably outnumbered four to one. It’s possible that they lacked the training and military hardware needed to fight skilled warriors. But God was on their side, and He always accomplishes His purposes.

What overwhelming odds are you facing today? What circumstances loom over you like a towering impossibility?

My friend, El Elyon spoke the universe into being. Nothing is impossible for Him. You might feel as though you’re fighting a losing battle but hold onto hope and remember who’s holding onto you.

When you’re doing what God has called you to do, He will overcome every obstacle. His name is El Elyon, and there is no God higher than Him. He’s the boss and has the final say, so do not be afraid; nothing stops Him from fulfilling His purposes for your life.

“El Elyon, I confess that the odds seem stacked against me when I look at my situation. I feel afraid and overwhelmed. As the psalmist did, I cry out to You, God Most High, and ask You to come to my rescue. Remove the obstacles, bring victory, and have the final say. I choose to trust You to fulfill Your purposes for my life. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
