You Choose First

Remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

Acts 20:35

Many large law firms and individual attorneys try to take on a certain amount of pro bono work each year. Work done pro (Latin, “for”) bono (Latin, “the good”) is accomplished without charge for clients who are unable to afford an attorney. It is legal work done “for the common good,” given away by the attorney at no charge to the client. From Jesus’ perspective, pro bono work of any sort—legal or other kinds—is a blessed event since “it is more blessed to give than to receive.”

When Abraham and Lot decided to go their separate ways in the land of Canaan, Abraham took the initiative and told his nephew, “Choose whatever portion of land you want, and I’ll take what remains.” Lot chose the best for himself—the well-watered plains of the Jordan River Valley—while Abraham moved farther into arid Canaan. But because Abraham placed a priority on giving instead of receiving, God blessed him in many ways. Lot, on the other hand, created a legacy of worldliness and sin for himself and his family (Genesis 13). Whenever you have the opportunity, give! It is an act God promises to bless.

Giving is a God kind of choice. Whenever we choose to act like God, blessings will follow.

When it comes to giving, some people stop at nothing.
